Colorful DIY Washi Tape Keyboard Tutorial Part 2

When I said "I'll see you tomorrow", I really meant ummmmm . . . Friday!  I hope everyone had an awesome week and have some fun plans for the weekend!

So, here we go with Part 2 of the most colorful washi tape keyboard in the world!  (Maybe)

If you'll recall in part 1, I was going to use the white gel pen for lettering.  I changed my mind.  I do that a lot when I'm crafting.  That's the "creative" part!  ;)  I loved how it looked on my laptop, not at all on my portable keyboard, (which by the way if you type way faster than you text, like me, this keyboard is amazing and now it's super, over the moon cute too!)  I am getting ahead of myself though.  We'll get there in a minute.

I finished cutting all my little washi tape squares and randomly placed them where I thought they would look good and when I say random, I do mean random, in a totally go with whatever you feel looks good to you way! You are the one who will be looking at it every day, so you want it to make you smile and virtually pat you on the back for a DIY job well done!!

Then I mod podged it.  I just used a q-tip dipped in a little bit of the mod-podge that I had poured into the cap.  Not too heavy a coat, cause it just doesn't need it and it will take too long to dry.  It will also make writing your letters a little difficult.  So, just a light coat will suffice.

*BE SURE TO READ THIS PART!

*You'll never guess what I did next!  Well, actually, I think quite a few of you will be able to figure it out!  See the photo below?  If you can guess what I did by looking at the photo, you will be entered into a drawing for 3 rolls of washi tape!  Let me know in the comments below.  Hehe . . . this should be interesting! ;)

I was not loving the white gel pen, like I said earlier.  I took my exacto knife a pulled it up.  Mod Podge is glue.  It is like Elmer's white school glue mixed with about 1/2 glue and 1/2 water.  That's it!  Buy the glue when it goes on sale for school time and you will be set with Mod Podge for life!  I found this out after I had purchased my Mod Podge.  I'm cool though, I use the empty bottles to make and store my own.  Also, Mod Podge makes a gloss finish, which I used here, but truth, I don't notice that much of a dif.  Maybe on a larger project or on cardstock.

What I did instead of the white get pen was use some stickers.
These were by Tim Holtz Idea-ology and are called label letters.  They are adorable! They look like little pieces from a Dymo label writer.  LIGHT BULB!!  When I redo my laptop, I think I will try my dymo lable writer out!  I have some different colors and I'm thinking red might suit me to a tee!  I'm sure I'll still mix in some washi tape as well!

Now the only thing left to do is Mod Podge it one more time, again . . . lightly.  This is to make sure my stickers don't slide around after they lose their stick from all my fast and furious typing!  This will also give it that much more durability and a longer and cuter life.

And, lastly, I used a ultra fine point Sharpie Permanent Marker to make the little symbols and wrote directly on the washi tape.  I did mine after, cause I forgot, and due to the fact it now has two layers, albeit light, of Mod Podge, it made it more difficult to write on.  So, it totes needs another going over with my Sharpie.  No biggie.

That's it guys!  I really love how it turned out and it really does make me smile every time I see it and/or use it!  And it looks pretty hot in a photo shoot too, don't you think?

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!  Let me know if you want more!!  I'm working on a 1 page PDF for this tute, short and sweet.  I let you all know when it's ready for download!

CRAFT HAPPY!

  4. Not even a clue what you are doing over the tape, sigh. I admire you for covering up the keys, very colorful and cheerful and yet no way I could do that to my own keyboard...would so upset my autistic son who would not stop until it was all peeled off.

  8. I agree with Kimberlee. You peeled dried Mod Podge of your hand. Makes perfect sense after the hint to think back to our childhood.

  9. You put glue on your hand, let it dry and peeled it off like skin. :)

  10. You let glue dry on the palm of your hand and peeled it off! :-) As universal a "kid-ism" as pretending the floor is lava, lol. Where did we come up with this stuff? :-P

  11. Duplicated your palm with Modge Podge, LOL, I remember using glue on a ruler for fake nails.

  12. I was the kid who always put glue all over my hand & let it dry too so I could peel it off! Tee-hee!

  13. You put Mod Podge on your hand or at least your palm and let it dry. Then peeled it off to reveal the pattern of the creases in your skin! I definitely used to do that, with Elmers glue. Did not discover Mod Podge until I was an adult, love the stuff!

  14. Thats funny! I still do that. Let it dry and peel it off to see how interesting the patterns of skin are :-)

    1. Hi, Petite!

The question is right above photo number 7, as you scroll down from the top! In photo #7, there is "something" laid across the washi taped keyboard. The question is: What is it? A clue is "Think back to your childhood" Thanks for making the effort and coming over to play, I so appreciate it!

  17. You had (or put) glue on your hand and peeled it off. I love doing that! When I was younger I used to put extra glue on my hands when we were doing crafts just so I could peel it off. Really a satisfying feeling in a strange way. :)
